Ruby Meaning, Uses & July Birthstone

Ruby Meaning, Uses & July Birthstone

Throughout history the ruby has been considered the most magnificent of all gems. It's sparkle and deep red striking colour make its allure popular and the fact that it is thought to bring passion and prosperity. It's the birthstone of July so we thought this is the perfect time to tell you a little more about this beautiful stone of love...

How and where Ruby is formed

Rubies are in fact formed naturally in the earth but under specific conditions. They are made from the mineral corundum or aluminum oxide. Only when there is extreme heat and pressure can they be formed, under the surface of the Earth. Corundum is made of densely packed oxygen and aluminum atoms which is actually a colourless substance. However, when some of the aluminum atoms are replaced by other minerals or substances, the stone can take on other colours. This is how the ruby is formed and gets it’s deep red hue.

Ruby uses

Revered in many cultures throughout history, Ruby has always been a talisman of passion, protection and prosperity. It symbolises the sun, and its glowing hue suggests an inextinguishable flame within the stone that legends claim would shine through even the thickest clothing and could not be hidden.

It was worn as an amulet or charm to ward off plague and pestilence, warned its wearer of impending danger, kept the body safe, and banished sadness and foolish thoughts. It was reputed to bring its owner peace, drive away frightful dreams, restrain lust, and to help resolve disputes.

Ruby initiates the sensual pleasures of life. It stirs the blood and stimulates the heart, encouraging one to enjoy being in the physical world. It increases desire and sexual energy. Ruby has always been associated with love, especially faithful passionate commitment and closeness. In antiquity Rubies were considered to be perfect wedding stones.

Ruby meanings

Ruby is the stone of nobility and is considered the most magnificent of all gemstones. Ancients believed its value exceeded even that of the Diamond.

It is thought to bring protection, passion and prosperity. Ruby actively stimulates the Base Chakra, increasing vitality and chi, the life-force energy, throughout the physical body and into the spirit. It promotes a clear mind, increased concentration and motivation, and brings a sense of power to the wearer, a self-confidence and determination that overcomes timidity and propels one toward prosperity and achievement.

Ruby birthstones

Ruby is the birthstone of July, so a perfect choice right now if you are looking for a July Birthday gift. It is the Zodiac Stone of Capricorn (22nd December - 19th January).

How to care for your Ruby jewellery

Because rubies are very hard, foreign matter accumulates on surfaces, causing a faded or cloudy appearance. Keep your rubies as clean as possible by applying lotions, perfumes and sprays before putting on your jewellery.

To eliminate dullness, clean rubies by applying a mixture of mild liquid soap and warm water. Gently rub your rubies and the jewellery mounting using a soft toothbrush. Rinse immediately with clean warm water and dry with a lint-free cloth for sparkling results.
